Do Motorcycles Need A Ralph Nader? Some Seem To Think So…

Long before he was a perpetual presidential candidate, Ralph Nader forever changed the automobile industry. In his 1965 book, “Unsafe At Any Speed,” Nader accused U.S. manufacturers of putting profits before public safety, detailing their resistance to seat belts and other features with the potential to save lives. The book raised public awareness and, along with concerns over rising highway fatalities, pressured lawmakers to adopt the 1966 National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, which empowered the federal government to administer new safety standards for automobiles. As a result, driving a car today is arguably safer than it has ever been. But the safety movement has largely bypassed motorcycles, which is why Sgt. Steve Spink – who spent years studying motorcycle crash data in the traffic services section of the Michigan State Police – wishes there was a Ralph Nader for the motorcycle industry. Billy Burns Sidecar Rubber on the Blacktop

20 years ago at age 18 Billy Colombini was a passenger in a truck that overturned on a back-road in Upstate NY. For over three hours he laid in the ditch in the dark waiting for help. As he waited, like anyone of us, he tried desperately to get himself up and out of the ditch. He realized then that things weren’t quite right. It was a tough phone call to get here in Southern California, in the middle of the night that your boy is in the hospital with a spinal cord injury. READ FULL STORY

Mass. AG announces $2.8 million in refunds through motorcycle insurance settlements

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley announced $2.8 million in refunds Tuesday through settlements with two insurance companies that allegedly overcharged policyholders who owned motorcycles. Encompass Insurance Company, an Allstate subsidiary, and Amica Mutual Insurance Company allegedly overcharged Massachusetts consumers illegally by using inflated and un-depreciated motorcycle values for the calculation of insurance premiums. Under the terms of the assurances of discontinuance, Amica will pay more than $800,000 and Encompass will pay more than $2 million to policyholders. The two carriers must send out more than 10,000 refund checks before February and make civil payments of $93,600 to the state. Continue reading

Motorcycles could bypass emissions test in Phoenix

According to a new proposal, more than 70,000 Arizona motorcycle owners could each save $19 a year by skipping annual emissions tests. Trevor Baggiore, deputy director of air quality with Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, said motorcycles make up 3.5 percent of vehicles on Valley roads and account for less than one percent of total emissions. "Most people especially here in Arizona in the summer don't drive their motorcycles," Baggiore said. "Also, just the emissions characteristics of a motorcycle are different from cars and they get better gas mileage." He said dropping mandatory tests will not impact air quality. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency supports the change and the requirement could disappear in early spring.
