AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series kicks off during Bike Week

The AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series kicks off its 2013 season on March 9 in Savannah, Ga. The popular series features period-correct vintage dirt-track motorcycles and exciting handlebar-to-handlebar racing action.  "The American Motorcyclist Association has a long and rich history in dirt-track racing, dating to the original factory Class-A competition in the 1920s," said AMA Track Racing Manager Ken Saillant. "When the Class-C production-based format made its debut, the sport's popularity grew, laying the foundation for modern competition. We're excited to continue paying tribute to our past with this series, and we're looking forward to another action-packed season of racing for our amateur competitors."  The AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series recognizes national champions in period-correct classes that reflect the storied history of AMA dirt-track competition. Class winners are honored at the annual AMA Championship Banquet, which recognizes national champions in all AMA-sanctioned disciplines.  Class rules and equipment regulations, updated and improved for 2013, are available atwww.americanmotorcyclist.com/racing/rules. The full series schedule is below.  The first three rounds of the 2013 AMA Vintage National Dirt Track Championship Series are part of an extensive dirt-track program in southern Georgia and Florida during Daytona Bike Week.  Following Bike Week, the 12-round series travels through Alabama, Illinois, New York, Ohio and Indiana before the finale in Cuddebackville, N.Y., on Sept. 21.

Help Petition the Federal Government To Stop Funding Motorcycle-Only Checkpoints

Want to take a stand for the rights of motorcyclists? Here is your chance to stop the practice of motorcycle-only checkpoints. First implemented by the State of New York, inspection checkpoints that apply only to motorcycles have become a more common practice across the United States, and are an act of discrimination that is primarily due to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) funding of the practice through special grants. Implemented under the guise of operating for the public’s safety, states like New York have been able to target motorcyclists at checkpoints for vehicle and passenger inspection, even when the motorcyclists have broken no apparent laws, with no similar checkpoints being setup for automobile drivers. An alarming trend in the unfair application of the law, some states, like California, have been able to preemptively ban the practice through their legislative branches; however, other states like New York have continue using motorcycle-only checkpoints, with the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit recently affirming motorcycle-only checkpoints as lawful in New York. Over two years ago, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) urged NHTSA Administrator David Strickland to cease the NHTSA’s funding of motorcycle-only checkpoints. After denying the request, the NHTSA has continued to provide federal funds to state and local police programs for the specific use of these checkpoints (the NHTSA’s response is here). While the issue will be delayed for years in the courts, there is something that we as motorcyclists can do now in order to enact change. You may have already heard of The White House’s “We the People” website, a site where citizens can petition the federal government for specific actions, and if enough people sign a petition, President Obama and his staff have to take the matter under consideration. Daytona Bike Week to feature AMA amateur dirt-track racing

One of the biggest weekends in motorcycling — Daytona Bike Week — will include several opportunities for AMA amateur dirt-track racers to compete in half-mile and short-track events, including the Daytona Flat Track limestone oval, March 8-12 in Georgia and Florida. In addition to events in the AMA All-Star Flat Track National Championship Series, the week will feature AMA Amateur Dirt-Track Holeshot races and rounds of the AMA Vintage Dirt Track National Championship Series. In all, youth, vet/senior, the next generation's stars and vintage racers will line up to compete during one of amateur dirt track's biggest weekends. "Motorcyclists from all disciplines converge on Daytona Bike Week for good reason: In early March, this is racing central," said AMA Track Racing Manager Ken Saillant. "Dirt track is no exception, and we're looking forward to kicking off the season with some great racing at one of the country's most historic locations for motorcycle competition." Promoters Steve Nace of Steve Nace Racing and Dave Joiner of Fast Fridays are working with the AMA to ensure the AMA amateur dirt-track events are run smoothly and provide all the excitement of a national-level event, from pre-entry to the podium celebration. The details of AMA amateur dirt-track competition during 2013 Daytona Bike Week, along with round-by-round contact information, are below. 2013 Hollister Rally Back On The Calendar, July 5th & 6th

The Hollister City Council recently voted to bring back the world-renowned Fourth of July motorcycle rally for the 2013 season. The American Biker image was born in Hollister Fourth of July weekend in 1947 when a group of rowdy bikers in town for the annual Gypsy Tour event reportedly terrorized the town. The story was picked up by Life magazine who published the iconic photo of a drunken biker sprawled on his bike amid a sea of beer bottles. The exaggeration was further sensationalized in the Marlon Brando movie “The Wild One”. The image stuck and has become an icon of Americana that lives to this day.  After “The Invasion of Hollister”, the annual Gypsy Tour event went dormant for decades. In preparation for the 50th anniversary of the historic event, Sonny Barger presented the idea of a rebirth to the city of Hollister and local business people. It took a lot of effort by many people, but it didn't take long for the Hollister Independence Day Rally to become the largest Motorcycle Rally on the West Coast.  This year, attendees can expect motorcycle-only parking filling downtown Hollister with side streets devoted to a wide variety of rally vendors. Two large entertainment areas downtown will offer live entertainment and local beer gardens. On Saturday, center lane parking on the main drag will be occupied by the official bike show which is a part of the World Championship of Bike Building. Motorcycle manufacturers will be in attendance at multiple locations offering demo rides. Riders will receive an enthusiastic welcome back from local businesses, eateries and taverns for this annual town highlight. Around the area there is excellent scenic riding, wine tours and a summer concert series at a local vineyard's outdoor amphitheater. See you in Hollister July 5th & 6th 2013!
