It's Wild Already Thursday News For January 9, 2014

Bikes, Modifications, Projects, Articles and Lots of News! Hey, It’s already nuts and we’re just getting started, but it’s all good, if we can hold it together. The team just popped for a ’97 Bagger for the Bikernet Baggers Editor from Liftestyle Cycles, so the techs will be flying. My mission for this weekend is to finish the Rivera Headlight tech. Plus we have new travel features flying at us. We are working on an ATK road test, building Wheeler Work Stations, and planning a photo shoot on our new line of 5-Ball leathers. Don’t even get me started. The shop dogs are pissed off that I haven’t bought another case of Mackerel. Let’s hit the news before I get in more trouble. CLICK HERE TO READ

MRF Helps New York City Motorcyclists Avoid EPA Stamp Law

In a sweeping piece of legislation addressed by the New York City Council last month, there was a small provision that would have allowed NYC police to issue fines to motorcycles not displaying the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) exhaust stamp. This stamp is currently required by the EPA on all new motorcycles certifying that the level of sound coming out of the tailpipe meets the Federal limit of 80 decibels according to the Federal Noise Control Act of 1972. Should the stamp not be easily visible, and most of the time they are not, the NYPD would be able to issue noise violations for a motorcycle that was not even running. This was not the first time this has been proposed by the NYC Council. A similar provision was put forth a few years back attime the Motorcycle Riders Foundation was very involved with having the proposal shelved. It was explained to the MRF that this is a last ditch effort by the outgoing NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg to force a massive piece of air quality legislation. Counsel at NYC Department of Environmental Protection informed the MRF about the language. The MRF mobilized with the politically active bikers of NYC to have a presence at the Council meeting. NYC Councilman and motorcyclist Peter Vallone, joined the bikers. At that time Vallone was the chair of the Public Safety Committee and backed up what the other motorcyclists were saying. The MRF source with the Department of Environmental Protection told the MRF that this language was ?absolutely Mayoral? and ?in no way a part of the normal council business?. Bloomberg has since stepped down.

Indian To Outsell Victory In 2014?

Indian Motorcycle is expected to outsell Victory, in 2014, according to a “Top 10 Predictions for 2014” list by Robin M. Farley, an analyst with UBS Investment Research. In a research note provided to Powersports Business, Farley provided three predictions in the leisure stock segment. “1. We believe Polaris’ Indian motorcycle will outsell Victory motorcycles in 2014, which suggests unit retail sales of roughly 15K in its first full year. 2. We believe that Harley’s US motorcycle retail sales, given the comp against last year’s 13% decline, could easily grow 10% in Q1 (though that would be needed to get to 5% growth for the year, since Q1 has the easiest comp.) 3. We believe Polaris will introduce the Slingshot in 1H ’14 which we believe will be targeting a younger demographic than the more comfortable seat of BRP’s Spyder (thus little customer overlap), though we think the marketing of PII’s Slingshot will certainly raise awareness of the 3-wheel market overall and may give that segment higher coolness factor.” Source: Powersport Business
