Motorcycle Thefts On The Decline, But Not For Harleys

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that motorcycle thefts are on the decline, and of five major brands, only Harley-Davidson owners saw an uptick in the number of stolen bikes in 2013, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. It’s hard to say why more Harleys continue to be stolen, but some speculate the riders are too trusting — leaving their bikes unlocked and unattended because most fellow riders won’t mess with them. Still, there were 3,907 Harley-Davidsons stolen in the U.S. last year, up 4% from 2012, while the percentage of stolen Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki motorcycles fell 2.1% (Kawasaki) to 9.1% (Suzuki), according to data from the trade association based in Des Plaines, Ill. Valerie Thompson Goes 208.71 mph At The Ohio Mile

Valerie Thompson shattered the East Coast Timing Association’s one-mile record in the MPS/Modified Class during the recent Ohio Mile competition on her BMW S 1000 RR. She rode 208.71 mph, easily breaking the former record of 205 mph. Thompson’s new record also qualified her for membership in the exclusive ECTA 200 MPH Club while claiming bragging rights as the fastest RR in the MPS/F-1000 Class.  “Going into this event, my confidence was very high. We made a few modifications to my BMW RR by adding new HP Race Parts provided by BMW Motorrad USA, Akrapovic exhaust systems and additional horsepower with Magic Bullet Advance Fuel Treatment. The wonderful folks at NorthStar Battery also helped us with special delivery of two of their excellent batteries, which was a great help,” said teamand rider Thompson. “It’s a great honor and achievement to be the newest member of the ECTA’s 200 MPH Club, especially since I am only the 3rd female of less than 100 members. I’ll be wearing my ECTA 200 MPH Club lifetime member shirt proudly,” added a smiling Thompson. The ECTA hosts four speed trial events at the Airborne Park facility in Wilmington Ohio each year. Prior to moving to the Airborne Park location in 2012, the ECTA held the competition in Maxton North Carolina from 1995 through 2011 and was named the Maxton Mile. Thompson and her BMW team now turn their sights on setting new land speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats during the July speed trials. For details, visit ValerieThompsonRacing.com.

New Ducati Scrambler On Its Way For 2015

Following many years of rumor and speculation around the project, Ducati acknowledged today the existence of a rumored Scrambler motorcycle by offering its employees a private viewing of its prototype at the Italian manufacturer’s headquarters. The Ducati Scrambler will be available from early 2015 onwards. Non-conformist, accessible and essential, the new Ducati Scrambler is said to represent the perfect combination of the traditional and contemporary, while returning to the pure essence of motorcycling – two wheels, wide handlebars, a simple engine and a lot of fun. None of the Ducati employees were allowed to take photos, but Ducati confirms the new Scrambler will break cover this fall and become available from early 2015 in Ducati Stores worldwide. Stay tuned!
