Betsy’s Bash Up

For a drifter the motorcycle is his sole and most valued possession. It is his house, car, TV, microwave, washing machine, and every other thing in the life of a normal man, all rolled into one. It’s the center of his world and when it stops his world stops with it. And so was I faced with a very real problem. With no home at which to return, no roadside assistance, no full coverage insurance, and no real money, how would I get this mess reassembled into one piece? Could it be done while on the road? After the wreck I’d called Randy White; an old friend who owns the Sturgis Swap Meet where he sells used HD parts during the rally. Upon hearing of the accident Randy had generously offered the use of his Kansas farmhouse and what parts he had. He’d said I was welcome to say as long as needed. Just now the farmhouse lay only a hundred miles ahead and I intended to arrive by late afternoon. Although I’d known Randy and his wife Shirley for many years, I’d no idea of what their home life might be like. That was about to change. The farm lay on a large plot of flat land that seemed indiscernible from the surrounding grasslands which fanned to the horizon in all directions. The old house was a weathered single story with large metal building out back. Around both sat every manor of old, and often collectible, car, van, tractor, trailer, motor-home, and even one train car. – Read the whole story on Bikernet.com

Harley-Davidson Offers Free Riding Academy Motorcycle Training To First Responders

Leading up to Thanksgiving, Harley-Davidson will expand its free Riding Academy motorcycle training offer to all first responders from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2016. To unveil the Ride Free offer for police officers, firefighters and EMS professionals, Harley-Davidson employees across the country volunteered at local firehouses and police stations in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Kansas City, Missouri, Milwaukee, San Diego, Wichita, Kansas and York, Pennsylvania. At the events, employees washed police motorcycles and fire trucks and served lunch to first responders. Police officers, firefighters and EMS professionals selflessly give to the communities where they live and work. Today, we’re giving back not only our time and energy but the opportunity for first responders to enjoy the personal freedom found on the open road. This announcement comes on the heels of the year-long extension of Operation Personal Freedom: Ride Free, the offer of free Riding Academy motorcycle training to all current and former U.S. military. Harley-Davidson is proud to expand free Riding Academy to those who protect and serve here at home as well as those who defend our freedom around the world. First responders can learn more about the offer by visiting a Harley-Davidson dealer or going to http://www.h-d.com/AmericanHeroes. If Riding Academy is not available in a particular area, Harley-Davidson will offer a Harley-Davidson Gift Card for the amount of the enrollment fee for a qualified third-party motorcycle riding course.

Flying Chairs Descend on Griffith Park for 44th L.A. Hackfest

There’s that old horse before the wagon question, but when it comes to motor-cycles, whether two wheels or three wheels came first is a matter of interpretation. Sure the ancient Sumerians apparently invented the chariot, but according to the all-knowing Oz aka Wikipedia, the first mention of a sidecar was visualized by a cartoon penned by a George Moore in the January 7, 1903 issue of the British publication Motor Cycling. Apparently just three weeks later another Brit, W. J. Graham of Graham Brothers, Enfield, Middlesex, acquired a patent for such a conveyance. Read more.

5-Ball/Bikernet/Paughco Bagger Part 4

Editor’s Note: Life is nuts, and we’re all flying in multiple directions. I sincerely appreciate Paughco’s involvement in this project. Steve Massicotte, head of Product Development at Paughco, took to this project like a kid in a candy store. Every time I catch him on the phone he is pumped to the max about some aspect of this build. Paughco, a historic custom motorcycle products company, is made up of diehard builders and enthusiasts. They don’t have any qualms at modifying Paughco products to test a new development and that’s constantly the case during this build. They modified their classic Paughco frame configuration, the front fender mounting, and now we are playing with rear fender rails and fender mounting. Steve, determined to mount a classic ribbed fender, dug through swap meets and found a OEM flip fender. “These fenders were made from ’58-’72,” Steve said. “This is actually the last year of the flip ribbed fender for swing arm frames.” Following is Steve’s description and notes about our progress: IMPORTANT NOTE: Since we used the OEM early Springer front fender with the beaded edge on the side that defines the top and side skirts we wanted to do the same on the rear fender. the early 1958-72 FL 4-speed fender has this same defining beaded edge. – Read more here.

Ducati Premieres 2016 Line, Introduces a New Diavel Cruiser and a small-displacement Scrambler

Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati, presents the latest 2016 products in Milan: seven new motorcycles unveiled on the eve of EICMA 2015 Improvements for models already in the range showcased alongside three new bikes that launch Ducati towards new worlds: the ‘Cruiser world’ with the XDiavel, the ‘Adventure world’ with the Multistrada 1200 Enduro and the ‘Pop world’ with the Ducati Scrambler Sixty2. “In 2015 Ducati sold over 50,000 bikes: a huge success that was achieved without growth being a goal in itself: it was, rather, the result of our customers being extremely satisfied with our products”, stated Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding during the presentation press conference. “After a long period of shrinkage, the motorcycle market is now showing promising signs of recovery and this, together with the effects of continuous product innovation and geographical expansion into new markets, has allowed us to increase sales in the first ten months of 2015 by more than 20% with respect to last year. This is an outstanding result, thanks also to the success of the Ducati Scrambler, a brand that won over new fans immediately. The title of the Ducati World Première 2016 was ‘More than Red: Black, Wild and Pop’.   The message is clear: Ducati is strongly rooted in the sports motorcycle world and is continuing to extend its reach. And that means expansion into new segments: Black like the XDiavel, a true cruiser; Wild like the Multistrada 1200 Enduro, a bike to break down the barriers on any terrain; Pop like the Ducati Scrambler Sixty2, an even lighter Ducati Scrambler with all the appeal of its smaller 400 cc engine. In total we have 7 new bikes at EICMA 2015. These, together with the Monster 1200 R, already presented at Frankfurt, and a new Ducati Scrambler

Andrew Hines Wins NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle Crown At Pomona

Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines riders Ed Krawiec and Andrew Hines closed out the 2015 NHRA Mello Yello Countdown the Championship as winners and world champions. Krawiec rode a screaming-fast Harley-Davidson V-Rod motorcycle to victory in the Pro Stock Motorcycle Auto Club NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., and Hines successfully defended his NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle title and secured his fifth career world championship in the class. With Hines and Krawiec at the controls of the team’s Harley V-Rod bikes, the Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines riders finished 1-2 in the standings for the second consecutive year, and have collected eight of the past 12 NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle world championships. Hines clinched his championship with a win in the second round of eliminations on Sunday. “My outstanding Harley-Davidson team did a great job of keeping me focused and keeping the pressure off of me this weekend,” said Hines, who at 32 years old is the youngest NHRA Pro to win five world championships. “My V-Rod was always on point. Having five championships is pretty awesome.” Andrew Hines, the son of NHRA Hall of Famer Byron Hines and younger brother of three-time Pro Stock Motorcycle world champ Matt Hines, is the first rider to win five Pro Stock Motorcycle titles since the late Dave Schultz reached that mark in 1994. Hines won four events during the 2015 season, including three in the six-race Countdown playoffs as he climbed from the third seed to take the title. Hines has 42 career wins, second place all-time in Pro Stock Motorcycle behind Schultz, who tallied 45 victories during his career. “Each one of my championships has been a unique experience,” said Hines. “This is a really competitive class right now, and we struggled in the middle of the season.
