BMW To Sponsor Sisters’ Centennial Motorcycle Ride

BMW Motorrad USA will be the title sponsor of the Sisters’ Centennial Motorcycle Ride, a cross country motorcycle adventure for women, commemorating the 100th anniversary of Adeline and Augusta Van Buren’s historic motorcycle ride across the United States. BMW Motorrad USA will provide motorcycles for the ride organizer and staff, and BMW of North America will provide BMW X5 chase vehicles and a 7 Series photography-equipped vehicle along the entire route.   Beginning July 3 in Brooklyn, New York (where the Van Buren sisters commenced their journey in 1916) and concluding July 23 with a group ride into San Francisco, CA, the transcontinental journey will raise awareness and funds for two women’s charities: Final Salute, Inc., a national women’s veteran’s organization, which provides temporary and permanent housing for the over 500,000 homeless female veterans in the U.S.; and the Women’s Coalition of Motorcyclists, which supports scholarships to increase the number of female instructors and coaches for road, dirt and track motorcycle rider training. “We appreciate BMW’s commitment to the female riding community, not only through its partnership, but also through its recent model enhancements to accommodate women riders of all sizes,” said event organizer Alisa Clickenger. “By applying advanced technology and design across one of the industry’s broadest range of models, there is truly a motorcycle for every rider within the BMW lineup. “It was a much different era for women motorcyclists in 1916,” added Clickenger. “With World War I looming, the Van Buren sisters wanted to demonstrate that women had what it took to be dispatch riders in the Army, and their transcontinental journey on a pair of motorcycles made U.S. history. “This was quite an accomplishment for two courageous women at a time when few roads were paved, post-Victorian attitudes were in full flare and women did not […]

Buffalo Chip Challenge Students’ Hard Work Pays Off at Donnie Smith Show

Months of hard work paid off for a group of Black Hills area high school students this weekend. The group, participating in the 2016 Buffalo Chip Challenge, earned two first place awards April 2 at the prestigious Donnie Smith Bike & Car Show in St. Paul, Minn. The student-built Buffalo Chip Challenge bikes, a fully customized 2016 Victory Cross Country and 2015 Indian Chief Classic each earned first place honors in the open class. The students competed against professional custom bike builders, which makes winning these awards an even more remarkable achievement. “Winning first place in competition against professionals was really exciting,” said Calvin Tohm, a junior from Spearfish Senior High School and member of Team Indian. “All of the hard work became worth it when they called us up there to accept the award. Going to the Donnie Smith Show taught me how to make a good first impression, and winning that award taught me to make the most of every opportunity.” The program, developed by Sturgis Buffalo Chip® president Rod Woodruff and coordinated by Keith Terry of Terry Components, was designed to prepare the next generation of American motorcycle experts and cultivate motorcycle industry economic development. Mentors Randy Cramer of Dakota V-Twin and Chris Malo of Baggster provided hands-on instruction to students from start to finish to create signature builds that fit the style of their teams’ esteemed captains, Rusty Jones of Rusty Jones Customs and John Shope of Dirty Bird Concepts. “The students worked very hard to prepare for the Donnie Smith Show,” said Rod Woodruff, president of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. “The kids definitely earned those first place trophies. Rarely have students stood together more proudly than this group did when they accepted those first place awards on the Donnie Smith Show Stage.” Students participating in

BIKERNET BONNEVILLE UPDATE, CHAPTER 9: Once more on track with the help of Paughco

This is a tough one. We all have dreams, but dreams take resources. And of course, your resources need resources. Our Bikernet, 5-Ball Racing dream is to build the first streamlined trike, the Salt Torpedo. Several companies recognized the concept and stepped up, including JIMS machine, Paughco, MetalSport, Carl’s Speed Shop and BDL. We got moving. I tried to stay true to form with my new Indian Chief, with the 5-Ball Racing color scheme, handled by American Biker in Charleston, SC. Hell, Dennis Manning, who is working on his first book about Salt Flat Racing, saw the light and helped initiate a trike class through the European sanctioning body, FIM. “If you’re building a trike, we better have a class,” Dennis said. Another company stepped up, Lucky Devil Metal Works in Houston, Texas, to help us mate the Paughco engine carriage to a dragster front end. Unfortunately, the one-man talented band, Kent Weeks, was forced to move his shop, and he couldn’t deliver on the frame. We had to adjust our thinking, look for more resources, shift gears and get the juices flowing again. While reshaping a set of beautiful Victory bags, Kent helped to organize all of our components. Then a brother suggested, “Ship them to LA. We’ll haul ass to Carson City and deliver them to the Paughco Wonderland,” said Kelly Dube. To read the rest of the article. Click here.
